Make sure that you check your doors and windows before settling in for the night or leaving your house. Keep your doors and windows locked when you are out or sleeping and make sure that security doors, gates and burglar proofing is properly fitted and secure. Robbers will try to cut the gates and proofing or undo the fittings.

Man’s best friend

Having a dog is more than having a best friend.  A dogs bark will scare off most would be intruders, not because they are afraid of the bite but because they know that the noise will alert the home owner and a robber will not take such a risk. If you feel you that you need a dog with more than a bark, you can always get a dog with a savage bite.

Use your home security systems optimally

What is the point of having an alarm system if you aren’t going to activate it? If you are going to invest in a home security system then make sure that you make good use of it. Don’t let your alarm system, your access control system or any other system put into place collect dust.

You have been warned

Let people know that you have a vicious armed response unit, or an even more vicious dog, waiting should they attempt to break in. A would be thief is less likely to break in if he or she knows that your house is defended.

Trim it

Overgrown gardens make for a nice place for intruders to hide out while they wait for you to come home or go to bed. Even shrubs next to your gate or under your window provide the perfect waiting place. Keep your garden neat to dissuade an intruder from trying to hide.

Intruders take chances when they think that your house is empty, when they think no one is home. Whether you are having a night on the town or you have gone away on holiday, try to make it seem as though someone is home. Leave a light on if you are going to be out late or maybe leave a radio on as well. If you are going away for a holiday get someone to house sit or arrange for a friend or relative to visit your house on a daily basis.
